Show and Tell - Crystal Lamp

Today is Show and Tell at Kelli's blog. Click on the icon below and it will take you to her blog.

Show and Tell

Today I would like to share this very special lamp.

It sits in our dining room on a table in front of the window. I turn this light on EVERY day! It is one of my "cozy" lamps that I turn on every morning that make my house feel more warm and cozy.

This lamp is very special. My mother gave it to me. She got it from her mother. We do not know how old it is, but my mother remembers it when she was a child.

It has this very cool crystal finial.
It has crystal hangydoodles hanging on the lower part. Ohhhh I just love it!!!
They just don't make things like this anymore, look at all the detail (hey, when did my hands get that wrinkled???)
The base is a brushed silver and has this neat raised pattern on it.

The little crystal dome in the above picture moves around and my mother told me that as a little girl she would spin that and spin it and there was a little dust ball that had built up because she spinned it. That little dust ball stayed in there until two years ago when my father rewired it and cleaned it all out. I am such a sentimental fool that I wish we still had the old dustball in there!!! LOL! (I'm serious!).

My mother gave me this for my birthday two years ago. She said it quit working so they bought a new one and then my father re-wired it and she gave it to me because she knew that I had always admired it. It still has the original shade and I am not sure that I like it, I go back and forth. What do you think about the shade? Should I replace it and if so with what kind???

"Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105

May God bless you today!

SOOO pretty. I love things that have been passed on and on and on. I especially love the drop crystals.
Thanks for the favor. You are a true friend, such a sweet spirit! Jen

How special is your lamp!! If the shade is original, I'd probably keep it....the important thing is that it makes you happy. A lamp that special needs a special shade. Thanks for sharing it's story.

I LOVE-LOVE-LOVE that special lamp of yours and the story that goes along with it :-) You should keep the lampshade.... in a closet. Seeing how the lamp is so ornate, I don't think thats the original shade that went along with it. Take the lamp to a speciality lampshade store and have them show you what it would look like with a different style & fabric... then head on over to Walmart and try to get it there cheaper :-) You can always put on the old lampshade whenever your wanting that vintage look again :-) The best of both worlds~

What a treasure! And I'm with you on the dust ball issue. For me, it's hard to believe that the lamp shade could be the original. The style is wrong for the base in my humble opinion. What is that material that the shade is made of? And even the shape seems wrong.

I love the crystal "hangydoodles"!

Personally I think I would change the shade.

Oh Sharon, whenever I come to your blog, I admire those wonderful roses at your blog banner *sigh*

Your crystal lamp is so precious and thanks for telling us the story that is behind! The crystals are lovely! And I like that shade, too! And ... oh my, I can see that you already have Easter chocolate eggs on your table!

Have a wonderful Friday!

Best wishes from Germany, Anita

I think the lamp is lovely just the way it is. If you didn't like giving up a dustball you might find changing the shade even more stressful!

I enjoyed seeing your heirloom lamp, it is beautiful. I'm with you on the shade, but if it is the original, I would have a hard time replacing it. "the wrinkled hands", that's just great!! LOL

What a beautiful piece. And since you asked, I think the lamp would look better with a different shade. It looks too rustic for such a fabulous lamp. I'm envisioning one with small ruffles (antique) on the edges or beads.

Save the shade but use on a different lamp.I think the shade would look great on a wooden lamp. The boys would probably like it.

I have a new contest on my blog that you might like to participate in. :)

Hiya sweetie! I think this lamp is very beautiful, and the shade is very retro! I would keep the same shade on if it's in good condition (which it looks like it is), but if you've grown tired of it, change it out, but hang on to the shade. I'm very sentimental too, and I could never part with any of it if it were mine, but I would swap it out from time to time to keep things fresh. Have a lovely day Sharon!

as long as the original shade remains in good shape I would say keep it.. it adds to the style and class of the lamp...
(of course that is only One lady's opinion)

Pretty, pretty pretty!!!! I like the crystal...the whole concept of clear brilliant crystal.

[and.........pssssst, I'm kinda weird like this, but I noticed the lovely curtains too....a very fitting accent for the lamp if you ask me!]

My Show N Tell is shared. Hope you can drop by for a few minutes' visit today.

What a beautiful lamp. I just love things that have sentimental "history". The shade maybe a replacement from years gone by. I love the crystal finial.

Leave the shade, I am a sentimental kind of gal. I would want those dust balls too, sorry they are gone. Your lamp is beautiful.

Unless the shade looks really ugly, I'd be tempted to keep it! My Mother-in-Law gave my hubby an old "train lantern lamp" years ago. For some odd reason she had put an ugly burlap shade on it that had a ruffle! The first thing I did was heave that lamp shade! I found a faux leather one that was more manly looking for that particuliar lamp! I liked the "hangy-doodles" and the detail on the lamp!

It's beautiful! I love the crystal. I think I would replace the shade. It's probably not the original, as I imagine something creamy.

Pam said...

What a beautiful lamp! I'm with Jan Parrish regarding the shade. I would pair that shade with a wooden lamp, and replace it with something daintier for the crystal lamp. Then you have two-for-one - two sentimental lamps. Or as Cheryl suggested, save the shade in the closet for awhile. I definitely wouldn't get rid of it.

What a lovely lamp, and what a lovely story! It really is beautiful. I think the shade is nice, but you could always get another one and just change them in and out. I'm not as sentimental about shades as the actual lamp.

Hi Sharon,

Thanks for visiting my blog! I love your lamp - especially the crystals hanging down! I don't know what I would do about the shade - I think maybe it is what makes the lamp so cosy and why you like using it every morning!

I can't wait to read your whole blog! Today is a quick fly by, but I will be back!

Oh my gosh. I know that is so special.Old things are special when we find them, but this time you know the homes it has helped to light. Beautiful.

cool story; I would get a second shade but keep the old one. I often switch out my shades to give the room a different feel and look. So keep the old and try a new and use both!!

Sharon, I love that lamp! I had no idea that we ever had this lamp in our house. Where did Mom keep it? I'm jealous! Actually, I'm very happy for you as I know how much you treasure pretty things, especially from family. I love all the history behind it too.

I didn't do show and tell again. I spent 30 min. getting it ready and poof, I lost it all, and there went my precious time. Well, anyway, I am enjoying everyone else's show and tell. The things I was going to show would maybe make you jealous anyhow (not really). You'll see next week.

I think it's a tough call with the lamp shade because it's the original one. It's hard to just get rid of it. On the other hand a prettier shade may bring out the beauty of the lamp better than this one. I really am happy that you got the lamp.

Love, Kathi

I think it's a beautiful lamp - and would it be as cozy and heartwarming if it had another shade? :)
What wonderful memories. Thank you so much for sharing!
Have a blessed day!

It just occurred to me why you deserve the lamp and not me. I don't remember it being in our house!! How can this be? How could I not know that such a pretty lamp existed and was in Mom and Dad's house? Why don't I know? Oh, wait a minute, it was in the green bedroom. Mom and Dad got it at about the time Stacey and I moved to Colorado and Texas, so I was not home much to admire it. Anyway I'm happy you have it. It's lovely. Love, Kathi

Just beautiful, Sharon! I love the crystals and I think the shade is lovely too. Even if it isn't the original one, it was the shade that your grandmother had, so I would keep it. The light it gives off is very cozy and pretty! A wonderful show and tell!
